Koniec XX wieku. Zniewolone przez Marsjan ziemskie społeczeństwo sterowane jest przez ogromną machinę telewizyjną. Sytuację tę chce przerwać popularny prezenter telewizyjny Iron Idem (Roman Wilhelmi), który wzywa do powstania przeciw Marsjanom. Scenariusz filmu został zainspirowany powieścią H. G. Wellsa o tym samym tytule. Produkcja należy do tetralogii filmowej science fiction w reżyserii Szulkina, na którą składają się również: Golem (1980), O-bi, o-ba. Koniec cywilizacji (1985) i Ga, ga. Chwała bohaterom (1986).
Polskie dystopijne kino sci-fi lat osiemdziesiatych, podejmujące krytykę medium telewizyjnego i ówczesnej polskiej rzeczywistości politycznej.
Film otrzymał Grand Prix, a także nagrody za scenariusz i reżyserię na Międzynarodowym Festiwalu Filmowym w Madrycie. Ponadto został uhonorowany Nagrodą Specjalną Jury na Międzynarodowym Festiwalu Filmowym w Trieście.

Jednym z jej zadań jest przybliżanie cudzoziemcom polskiej kultury, w tym historii polskiej kinematografii. Dzięki Cinematic Poland zagraniczni studenci i pracownicy będą mieli okazję obejrzeć zarówno filmy należące do klasyki kina, jak i współczesne produkcje.

Cinematic Poland: The War of the Worlds: Next Century, 1981, dir. Piotr Szulkin, sci-fi, Poland, 92 min.
Film opens on December 28, 1999, three days before the dawn of the new century. A local reporter, Iron Idem, announces that the Martians have landed. Shortly after that his program loses its independence: he is given the script telling the crowds how to welcome the invaders. Then the chaos breaks out: the Martians and police mistreat the populace; things become violent. Idem's wife is kidnapped and it seems somebody is trying to reduce his effectiveness as a reporter. Idem decides to fight back: he illegally broadcasts a message during a rock concert, but nobody believes him anymore.

The film received the Grand Prix, as well as awards for script and direction at the Madrid International Film Festival. Moreover, he was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Trieste International Film Festival.

Cinematic Poland is an initiative of the Andrzej Wajda Film Center of the University of Gdansk, Medical University of Gdansk and the International Office of the University of Gdańsk, an unit established to cooperate with the foreign part of the academic community. One of its tasks is to familiarize foreigners with Polish culture, including the history of Polish cinematography. Thanks to Cinematic Poland, foreign students and employees will have the opportunity to watch both classic films and contemporary productions.
