"Być sobą znaczy nie być kimś innym. I to wszystko. Ale nie być kimś innym można tylko pośród innych. Oto dlaczego zasiadałem w Radzie i pozostałem w Arras.
No, to prawda, lecz tylko częściowa. Bo kiedy mnie usunięto, zrozumiałem, że nie jestem bez winy. Janie, mówiłem sobie, czemuś nie bronił Fariasa de Saxe? Ponieważ nie zasługiwał na obronę, odpowiadałem natychmiast. Nie umiał cenić swojego życia, a zatem dobrze się stało, że zginął! Ale zaraz nowa myśl mnie trapiła. Jeśli tamci byli za straceniem Fariasa de Saxe, należało się temu przeciwstawić, aby pozostać kim innym. Pragnienie jednomyślności - odpowiadałem wtedy- wydaje się silniejsze niż pragnienie prawdy. Bo nie z prawdy czerpiemy poczucie naszego bezpieczeństwa, ale ze wspólnoty. Arras jest tym, co nas łączyna dobre i złe. I nic poza Arras nie posiadamy. A wiara? - pytałem trwożnie. Wiara - odpowiadałem natychmiast - jest ziarnem, gdy Arras jest glebą. Bez tego miasta szyderczy wiatr rozwieje naszą wiarę po obcych polach - i staniemy się żebrakami u zatrzaśniętych wrót świątyni."

"To be yourself means to not be someone else. And that is all. But not to be someone else you can do only when with other people. This is why I sat in the Council and remained within Arras. Indeed, that's true, but only partially. Because when I was removed, I understood, that I am not without a fault. Jan, I told myself, why did you not defend Farias de Saxe? Because he did not deserve defending, I respond immediately. He was unable to understand the value of his life, therefore it is good, that he died. But soon a new thought troubled me. If they were for the execution of Farias de Saxe, it should have been opposed, to remain someone else. The need of unanimity - I responded then - seems to be more powerful than the need of truth. For not from truth we derive the feeling of safety, but from unity. Arras is that which binds us, through thick or thin. And nothing besides Arras we don't have. And faith? - I asked anxiously. Faith - I responded immediately. - is the seed, when Arras is the earth. Without this city the mocking wind would scatter our faith on the alien fields - and we become beggars under the locked gates of the sanctum."
